However, if you are more than 40km/h over the limit, you will be fined $1,245. 

This is also true for the associated demerit points. A lesser offence will attract 1 demerit point, while a significant offence (for example being over the limit by 30km/h) will attract at least 6 demerit points. If you are detected at more than 40km/h over the speed limit you can expect 8 demerit points and a 6-month licence disqualification.
