The Offence of Arson

In Queensland, the offence of arson is outlined in section 461 of the Queensland Criminal Code.  Arson is considered a serious offence in Queensland and, as such, is punishable by a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.  The law sets out that a person is guilty of a crime if they wilfully and unlawfully set fire to:

  1. a building or structure;
  2. a motor vehicle, train, aircraft or vessel;
  3. any stack of cultivated vegetable produce or mineral or vegetable fuel;
