Together with speeding offences, red light camera infringements are one of the most common traffic related offences. Failing to stop at a red light is a punishable offence under Queensland’s Transport Operations (Road Use Management – Road Rules) Regulation 2009.
Red light cameras can be positioned at any intersection where there is a traffic light. They operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
If you drive across the solid white line (thereby entering the intersection) when facing a red light, the camera will take a photo. A subsequent photo will be taken one to two seconds later to further demonstrate your location. This can occur for red lights and red turning arrows.
These images are then sent to the Traffic Camera Office together with details of the offence (time, date, lane position, for example). In most instances, a red-light infringement involves the following:
- Receiving a notification letter in the mail.
- An accompanying fine.
- Notification of associated demerit points off your licence.
Red light infringements can also be issued by police on the spot, from marked or unmarked cars.
Generally, a red-light infringement will result in 3 demerit points and a fine of $400.
If you have previous traffic offences next to your name, the penalties can be more significant, and accumulation of demerit points can result in your licence being disqualified.
